Description

This program provides NSERC’s entry-point to the Tri-Agency interdisciplinary peer-review mechanism. Horizons supports investigator-initiated individual and team projects that broadly integrate or transcend disciplines to advance knowledge in the natural sciences and engineering.

Discovery Horizons grants support investigator-initiated individual and team projects that broadly integrate or transcend disciplines to advance knowledge in the natural sciences and engineering (NSE).

An eligible proposal must meet both of the following criteria:

  • Its primary objective must be to advance knowledge in the natural sciences or engineering
  • It must integrate or transcend disciplines in ways that would significantly benefit from peer review by a Tri-Agency interdisciplinary committee (as opposed to a joint review by NSERC's Discovery Grants evaluation group

Grant awards valued from $50,000 to $100,000 per year for up to 5 years. For this competition, NSERC is expecting to award approximately 10 to 20 grants.

There are no requirements to team size or composition; however:

  • each team member must be eligible to hold NSERC funds,
  • individuals are allowed to participate in one Discovery Horizons application, as applicant or co-applicant, per competition cycle,
  • individuals participating in a Discovery Horizons grant as an applicant or co-applicant cannot hold both a Discovery Grant and Discovery Horizons grant, and
  • ???????NSERC may take additional factors (for example, career stage, regional representation or self-identification as a member of an underrepresented group of the applicant or co-applicants) into account when selecting amongst similarly ranked LOIs.

Upcoming Webinar information can be found here. A recording of the presentation will be shared as soon as it's available.
