Tri-Agency - Special Response Fund for Trainees (Ukraine)

The Special Response Fund for Trainees (Ukraine) is administered by Canada’s three federal research funding agencies – the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) – and provides relief and assistance to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers directly impacted* by the Russian regime’s invasion of Ukraine.

* Direct impact is defined as

• a trainee who was expected to return to Ukraine in 2022 but cannot because of the current crisis; or
• a trainee who cannot continue their planned course of studies or research in Ukraine because of the crisis and is now in Canada

All active and eligible grant holders across the three research funding agencies can apply for this special supplement through their particular granting agency. Application forms, instructions to apply, and specific eligibility guidelines for each agency are available at the following links:

Support can be requested for a period of up to 12 months. The maximum allowable amounts are as follows:

Master’s level           Up to $20,000

Doctoral level           Up to $25,000

Postdoctoral level     Up to $45,000

Agencies will accept applications (signed by ORS) on a rolling basis up to December 22, 2022. Decisions are expected to be shared within 20 business days.
