New Investigator Award (NI)
Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada New Investigator Award program is a salary award to support early-career investigators who have demonstrated excellence in their doctoral and post- doctoral training and wish to establish their own independent research career (“Applicants”). Salary awards provide an added incentive for researchers to continue or begin their program of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular research within Canada.
The stipends, amounting to a maximum of $240,000 ($80,000 per year for up to three (3) years), will support successful NI Applicants ("Recipients") in conducting their research programs and engaging with mentors and trainees at their respective institutions ("Host Institutions").
Heart & Stroke implemented new Research Security requirements in 2025 for their research grant competitions and has adopted the use of both the National Security Guidelines for Research Partnerships (NSGRP) and the Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern (STRAC) Policy to address Research Security and safeguarding research concerns. Your application must include:
- If advancing a Sensitive Technology Research Area, the PI must fill out a STRAC attestation.
- All applications with collaborators outside of UM will need to fill out a Risk Assessment Form using the RAF guidance document to create a first draft. Please contact the Research Security Office to help you determine if your research is advancing a STRA or for any questions you may have in completing the Risk Assessment form.
