Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) Competition
Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
The NSERC Collaborative Research & Training Experience (CREATE) program supports the training and mentoring of graduate students from Canada and abroad, and, among many features, specifically encourages:
- enriched training and mentoring experiences
- improved job readiness, and
- student mobility
CREATE grants are valued at up to $1.65M over 6 years; 70% of the budget is allocated to student stipends.
The University of Manitoba has a quota of 2 applications in the 2026 competition. The CREATE program is considered to be an institutional grant, therefore project LOIs submitted to ORS by the deadline will be evaluated by a small internal adjudication committee, headed by the Vice-President (Research and International-VPRIO).
Applicants to the LOI phase should complete the attached additional page to outline how their proposed CREATE program will advance the UM Strategic Research Plan 2024-2029, for the consideration of the internal adjudication committee. LOIs submitted within the UM’s quota will not be adjudicated by NSERC, and those submitted to NSERC will be invited to full application.
Multi-faculty submissions are strongly encouraged. Faculties that wish to support multiple initiatives must provide a priority ranking of them for the ORS internal LOI deadline.
Potential applicants are invited to reach out to ORS in advance of the LOI deadline; we would be happy to meet to discuss their program plans.
The LOI phase includes a Letter of Support from VPRI (provided by ORS) which will confirm University endorsement but need not include details of financial support.
