Research Description

I am a historian of early modern Europe. I am interested, above all, in the varieties of political cultures of the late Renaissance, but also know a little about French and Swedish national histories and historiographies. My first work compared the role of commerce in Cardinal Richelieu's France and Axel Oxenstierna's Sweden, showing how Dutch innovations in commercial organization, information and ideology helped reshape European politics. I am currently interested in the formation and travails of a pan-European elite, which brought together scholars, diplomats, artists, arms-dealers, bankers and other assorted rogues, who together both helped strengthen early modern states and articulate broader languages of solidarity.

Teaching Description

I teach courses on early modern and medieval European history, ranging from surveys to more specialized upper-year and graduate courses.
