Research Description
My research examines lifestyle decisions that contribute to population health and well-being, and the social psychological and personality factors behind those decisions. I especially draw upon theories in social and personality psychology that address the interplay of action and identity – where identity is examined as a cause, consequence, and sometimes an object to be shielded from our actions and decisions.
Within the Action and Identity Lab at the University of Manitoba, I have used this approach to study topics in the psychology of health and aging, such as self-rated health, physical activity, goal conflict, perceived control, social comparison, and collective self-esteem. I am currently working on several projects to investigate how personal decision-making is related to individual differences in self-compassion.
These projects build upon our current understanding of how self-compassion relates to mental processing of past events, and they pivot toward a new understanding of how self-compassion relates to mental processing of the future – i.e., the prospects of gains and losses that have not happened yet. Using survey and experimental research designs together with applied multivariate statistics, my students and I are investigating consequences of self-compassion for risky decision-making related to consumerism, gambling, lifestyle change, and sport injury rehabilitation.
