Research Description
Lori Wilkinson is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg Canada. Her research centres on the economic and social outcomes of immigrants and refugees, with a special focus on women and youth. Her current projects include a national study of the pandemic arrival experiences of Afghan refugees, the experiences of sexual- and gender-based violence among newcomer women in Canada, international students and their perceptions of university and life in Canada, and the pandemic outcomes of Indigenous peoples and newcomers in Canada, USA and Mexico.
She currently holds a Canada Research Chair in Migration Futures. In 2023, she was awarded Distinguished Professor at the University of Manitoba. In 2024, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. In 2021, she was awarded the Metropolis Researcher of Excellence Award. For over a decade, she has served as the director of Immigration Research West, a multidisciplinary group of over 100 members who work together to educate Canadians about the contributions of newcomers. She volunteers with several international, national and local community organizations working toward the successful resettlement of newcomers. She is the author of dozens of peer-reviewed articles, government and community reports and books on research methods in the social sciences.
Teaching Description
Dr Wilkinson currently teaches undergraduate and graduate level statistics and survey research methods. She also is responsible for teaching the sociology of ethnic relations class which focuses on issues related to antiracism, inequality, discrimination, migration, xenophobia and hate crimes.

COVID-19's differential impact on the mental and emotional health of Indigenous Peoples and Newcomers: A socioeconomic analysis of Canada, US & Mexico
In this study of Mexico, USA and Canada, we examine the differential social, economic and mental health outcomes experienced by newcomers, refugees, Indigenous peoples and racialized peoples during the pandemic. We are one of the largest continuous longitudinal surveys of this nature in North America.

Education, Human Rights and Social Justice in a Multicultural Society
A joint course, taught by U of M faculty members in Native Studies, Education and Sociology in conjunction with faculty members from Jadavpur University, Kolkata India focusing on comparing various aspects of social justice between the two countries. Students from Manitoba were joined by students from India to explore issues related to human rights, history, education and social inequality. The students participated in a variety of events including a guided tour of the Bannock Point Petroforms, meetings with executives from the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, experts on genocide from the University of Alberta and teachings from Aboriginal elders.

Markers of Ethnic Marginalization: First Nations in Canada
A collaboration between researchers from the University of Manitoba and the Czech Republic resulted in a conference and book that examines various issues related to social inequality among the Roma in the Czech Republic and Aboriginal Peoples in Canada.
