Research Description
I am interested in the way young organisms form attachments to their parents and to each other. I am also interested in the way parents form attachments to their offspring. I study mallard ducks and Canada geese in their natural environments as well as in the laboratory. Imprinting is a term that used to cover this area of interest. Today, avian attachment behaviour is a more appropriate term one should use to describe this area.
Teaching Description
I teach courses in animal behaviour. One of my courses is titled Elements of Ethology. It is a first course for students interested in learning how to study an organism in its natural environment. Another course that I teach is titled Comparative Psychology. It teaches the student how to compare one organism with another organism. I also teach a large section of Introduction to Psychology. I enjoy applying small class techniques to super sections of Introduction to Psychology students.
