Research Description
I specialize on auction theory. Auctions are extensively used by governments, firms, and public. Telecommunication companies such as Manitoba Telecom Services (MTS) and Rogers buy spectrum through auctions designed by Industry Canada. Google uses auctions to determine which advertisments will be placed (and in what order) whenever a user searches keywords. I work on auction design; that is, what type of auction must be used to maximize revenue and/
I also specialize on firms' strateiges, competition policy, and industrial organization. Firms use different pricing strategies in different markets. They also use (legal or illegal) strategies to deter entry of other firms, or collusion strategies to fix prices. Competition Bureua/
My other area of research has been the role of beliefs on market crashes, initial public offerings (IPO), and microeconomics level development issues.

I also follow oil (gas) prices, Bank of Canada interest rates, Dow Jones Stock Index (DJI).
I have published in respected journals (such as Economic Theory, Journal of Corporate Finance, Canadian Journal of Economics, and Southern Economic Journal) on these topics and have been invited to many universities (such as University of Melbourne, Osaka University, Kyoto, York, Ryerson) to give seminar talks.

Auctions (spectrum license auctions)
This is a joint project with Dr. Xin Meng at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) in China. This research is now funded by The National Natural Science Foundation of China.
This research analyzes the shortcomings of the auction design used to sell spectrum licenses in Canada in 2008. We showed that if another auction method were used, government's revenue would be 3% more and the specturm allocation would be efficient. Given that the revenue of the auction were 4 billion dollar, a 3% increase would be $120 million. Our research used some simplifying assumptions so one has to be careful when interpreting the results. Not surprisingly, Industry Canada announce that it will use a different design in their next round of spectrum license auction.

Social Learning in Duopoly--Research Visit to Osaka University
This is a research project that I started when I was visiting Osaka Unviersity and Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore during my research leave in 2012. This research anlayzes the pricing strategies of firms in a "duopoly" market when consumers learn the quality of the good the firms sell.

Initial Public Offerings-IPOs
Dr. Gonul Colak, at Florida State University, Finance Department is a research collaborator. It is funded by SSHRC. The results of this research is published at a respected finance journal, Journal of Corporate Finance.
Our research shows that the firms that go public after an economic recession are more likely to be "bad" quality firms. The "good" quality firms wait to see the results of these first initial public offerings before going public.
